Nobody But Me

by Templeton Thompson/Sam Gay/Porter Howell

Lord knows I’ve changed
Everything from the way I talk
To the color of my hair
I was afraid
If I didn’t play the game
I’d never get anywhere
And I used to say….

What is it that you want, exactly?
Just who do you need me to be?
Thinkin’ that way was never gonna make me happy
I thank God I finally see
That no matter what anyone else might think
I can’t be nobody but me
The right clothes, the right friends
Lookin’ back I have to laugh
Yeah, I used to try so hard
If it don’t fit, it don’t fit
These days I don’t do anything
If I don’t feel it in my heart
I used to say…

What is it that you want, exactly?
Just who do you need me to be?
Thinkin’ that way was never gonna make me happy
I thank God I finally see
That no matter what anyone else might think
I can’t be nobody but me
Livin’ in my skin
Doin’ what I do
Never felt so right….so true
Doin’ my own dance
Knowin’ where I stand
And I ain’t got nothin’ to prove
Oh to think I used to say…..
What is it that you want, exactly?
Just who do you need me to be?
I know who I am and I know what makes me happy
Oh I thank God I finally see
That no matter what anyone else might think
I can’t be nobody but me
